FAQ
When it is time to consider a nursing home for your parents?
It may be time to consider a nursing home when both medical and personal care needs have become too great to handle at home or in another senior living community. This may be due to a recent hospitalization, or a chronic illness which has gradually been worsening. Or perhaps your parent needs a higher level of care temporarily after a hospitalization, but it’s anticipated you will be able to return to home after a period of time.
How do I apply for Louisiana Long-Term Care Medicaid?
Our social and business offices will help you through the entire Medicaid application process. Here is a link to the application here.
How much does skilled nursing cost?
The cost of skilled nursing varies depending on where you live, what level of care is provided and what type of accommodations you choose. Most seniors do not usually meet their long-term care needs from any one source. Instead a combination of support—private funds, long-term care insurance and government assistance—is used to foot the bill. Medicare covers post-hospital, short-term skilled care only—and may not cover the cost of ongoing nursing home care. For low-income seniors who meet eligibility requirements, Medicaid might pay a portion of the cost.
What’s the difference between skilled nursing and long-term care?
Skilled nursing is a short-term stay usually paid for by Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan and focuses on advanced nursing and rehabilitation. These stays sometimes involve co-insurance amounts that you will be made aware of prior to admission. Long-term care is paid for by private resources, long-term care Medicaid or long-term care polices. Its focus is on activities of daily living, although nursing and rehabilitation services are also available to long-term care residents.
What type of items may I bring from home?
We encourage residents to bring items to their new home. Items that we recommend to make the transition easier are pictures, decorations, small furniture items, radios, and DVD players.
